Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services Dr. Ismaila Ceesay says the political alliance backing President Adama Barrow ahead of the December presidential election has about 54 years of combined experience in government.

Speaking in an interview with West Coast Radio, Dr. Ceesay said the alliance brings together about nine or 10 political parties with long experience in Gambian politics.

“If you take 22 years of PPP, 10 years of NPP, and 22 years of APRC, that’s 54 years of experience in power in this alliance,” he said.

When asked whether the APRC’s 22 years in government was a record the country would want to celebrate, Dr. Ceesay acknowledged the criticism but argued that the party also recorded some achievements during its time in office.

He said the party’s shortcomings might have overshadowed the positive developments recorded under its government.

The minister also pointed to the alliance’s experience in opposition politics, citing parties including the NCP, GDC, CA, GMC and NRP, as well as politician Essa Faal.

According to him, their combined experience in opposition politics amounts to nearly 50 years.

Dr. Ceesay described the alliance as very dynamic arguing that it brings together political parties and figures who have experienced government and opposition politics.

He added that a political movement led by Sidat Yaffa had recently joined the alliance, making it the first movement, rather than a political party, to become part of the coalition.
