The High Commissioner and the officials from the Nigerian High Commission were accompanied by Gambia Tourism Board officials to the domestic tourism promotion drive.
High Commissioner Harriet King thanked the Gambia Tourism Board for organising such an important domestic educational tour for diplomatic missions.
This is a good experience for them as diplomats, she said, adding that the Gambia and the UK have had long-standing relations.
Mamo Suwaneh, head of the team, who spoke on behalf of the GTBoard DG, thanked the British High Commissioner and the representative of the Nigerian High Commissioner for taking the time to be part of the tour.
“We want to make this very important to interact as much as possible,” he said, adding that more investment is needed on the River Gambia.
He also said the Gambia Tourism Board was established by an Act of Parliament in 2011 with the sole purpose of promoting The Gambia as a tourist destination and also to regulate the same industry to ensure that there is a fair play, he said.
“The River Gambia is very significant in the sense that, we used it for transportation, and during the colonial rule, when there were no roads, people used the river for transportation.”
Penda Sowe, vice president of Brikama Craft Market, thanked the British High Commissioner for visiting the craft market, saying, “Brikama Craft Market is the founder of all these markets in The Gambia.”
