Barrow urges youth to refrain from ‘backway’

President Adama Barrow has called on Gambian youth to cease embarking on the dangerous route to Europe using what they referred to as ‘backway’.

He urged the young people of the country to grab the opportunities provided by the government for youth empowerment.

“There are lot of policies, programmes and opportunities that have been provided for young people of this country that are intended for their own advancement. What we are witnessing in the country of recent is sad,” the President said. “Many young people are losing their lives using the backway trying to reach Europe. I want to urge alkalolu to work with their communities in discouraging people from embarking on this journey. Parents who want to send their children to Europe, should do so using the right way,” he said.

It could be recalled that dozens of young people mostly Gambian were reported to have died in their attempt to sail through the Canary Island to Spain.

President Barrow, who was speaking on Monday at a meeting at Pakau Njogu, in the Upper Nuimi District, North Bank Region (NBR), expressed condolences to the deceased families.

“The government is doing everything possible in ensuring that young people of this country are provided with employment opportunities,” he said. 

“During my recent visit to Saudi Arabia, the Gambia government and the government of Saudi have signed agreements that are for the betterment of youths of this country. Through the agreement, lot of young people will be taken to Saudi Arabia to work and also learn other skills.” 

President Barrow also announced that the government has also signed agreement with investors in ensuring there is yearly rice cultivation in the country, claiming that this development will begin early next year.

Visit to Hakalang Road project

The Gambia leader and delegations also visited the Hakalang Road project that is currently under construction.

Speaking during a stop at Nuimi Lamin, Barrow expressed satisfaction on the ongoing work, saying: “Upon the completion of the road, it will boost the economic activities within the area and link the various communities together and address the road network problem they have been encountering over the past decades.”
