Following his participation in the inaugural annual conference of the ECOWAS Regional Competition Authority in The Gambia, General Diop visited the Presidency to commend President Barrow for his continuous support not only to Senegal but to the wider ECOWAS community.
Discussions focused on the challenges facing ECOWAS and highlighted key initiatives required for the implementation of critical projects in security and stability, trade, energy, good governance, and sustainable inclusive development.
In his remarks, President Barrow advised General Diop to uphold diplomacy and effective communication in working closely with the Heads of State of the regional bloc to safeguard democracy. The Gambian leader further congratulated General Diop and assured him of his government’s full support in the execution of his duties.
General Diop expressed sincere appreciation for President Barrow’s words and the legendary hospitality of the Gambian people. He assured his commitment to build on the work of his predecessor, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray.
Reflecting on the historic transition at the ECOWAS Presidency, President Barrow remarked: “It is historic that The Gambia held the Presidency of ECOWAS and handed it over to Senegal in the fifty years of ECOWAS’ existence.”
President Barrow equally observed that the bloc is well‑organised and must stand firm in upholding democratic principles and regional integration. He acknowledged ECOWAS' support in providing a favourable democratic environment and unprecedented development that has transformed the face of The Gambia.
