The President of the republic of The Gambia, H. E. Adama Barrow, has supported the Federation of Gambia Muslims Youths (FEGAMY) International Youth conference.

The International convergence, held at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre, was part FEGAMY’s annual summer youth camp. It aims to empower and educate young people in The Gambia with essential life skills, leadership qualities, and a strong foundation in Islamic values.

The support, the organisers said contributed immensely in ensuring the successful hosting of the event which was attended by over two hundred young people.

The theme for the 12th edition was: ‘Combating gambling and drug abuse across the Senegambia.

Pape Abasse Drammeh, President of the Juste Movement of Senegal, underscored the significance of the convergence, saying: “Many young people are involved in drug issues due to peer influence or materialism. Therefore, as young people of the region, we should rise up and arrest the menace.”

Ebrima Bah, director of FEGAMY Youth Camp, urged young people of the region to grab the opportunities available within the region and desist from all activities that are detrimental to their well-being. “Such kind of convergence shouldn’t only be limited to Gambia and Senegal but the entire Africa.”

Bah thanked President Barrow for his personal intervention in ensuring the success of the event, saying: “I want to sincerely thank the president for the support. I can certainly say that without his support, we wouldn’t have been here today.”

For his part, Ibrahima Ceesay, the President of FEGAMY, spoke at length on the importance of awareness and sensitisation in combating the menace of drug use and abuse and other related issues among young people, saying: “We offer a combination of day and night session, promoting personal development and friendships. Our teachings are delivered by carefully chosen presenters and cover a variety of topics aligned with Islamic principles.”

“The camp revolves around learning about and emulating the life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as outlined in the Qur'an and Hadith.”
