The ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to The Gambia, Liu Jin, yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Gambia’s minister of Health, Dr Ahmadou Lamin Samateh on China sending a Medical Team to The Gambia.

The signing ceremony was held at the Chinese Embassy in Bijilo.

Over the past few years the government of the People’s Republic of China has been providing The Gambia with 10 highly qualified health professionals each year. The latest team of specialists is the sixth since the two countries’ resumption of diplomatic relations. The team will work in The Gambia for the next 5 years.

This year marks the 60th anniversary since the Government of the People’s Republic of China started sending Medical Teams to Africa. It has sent over 200 doctors to The Gambia.

Dr Ahmadou Lamin Samateh, Minister of Health thanked the Government of the People’s Republic of China for partnering with The Gambia to support President Adama Barrow’s vision for the country.

He added that the country cannot develop without a robust, functional, efficient and responsive health sector.

Minister Samateh observed that the government of the People’s Republic of China has been supporting the country with doctors for decades.

He added that they have also constructed some health centers in the country and want to renovate and equip them again.

He further said that they also recently bought two brand new generators for Karantaba Health Center that has been having electricity problems and also supported his ministry with two vehicles for health facilities monitoring.

“They have also been providing us with a lot of equipment as well as medicine. When people were afraid to travel during Covid-19, China sent us a response team and also supported us with our test kits and life saving equipment,” he also said while describing the partnership as phenomenal between the two countries.

His Excellence Liu Jin, the People’s Republic of China’s ambassador to The Gambia, said the signing of the agreement reflects the friendship between the two countries and fruitful cooperation in the field of medical and health services.

“I’m sure that the 10 doctors will do their best to provide professional services for Gambians,” he stated, saying that the team has shown their willingness to work with their Gambian colleagues to serve the Gambian people.

“Our bilateral relations are very sincere and we are true friends. We will continue to strengthen this kind of cooperation which are mutually beneficial to both nations,” Liu said.
