The programme is an initiative by the telecommunications company designed to provide young graduates with a year-long paid internship where they receive hands-on work experience, mentorship, and specialised training in leadership, languages, and innovation, aiming at developing future leaders within the company and the wider community.
Speaking at the launch, Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Hussein Diab-Ghanem said The Future Leaders Programme, is a key initiative under the AfriStars Impact Foundation, replicated across the global markets, namely Sierra Leone, DRC Congo, and Angola.
“It is built on two main core objectives: One, providing opportunities for high-performing students from esteemed public institutions like the University of The Gambia, the American International University of Africa, and the University of Science, Engineering, and Technology. Through this programme, top students will have the chance to intern at AfriStars, gaining real-world experience and opening doors for possible future employment,” he explained.
“We are committed to contributing to their education, ensuring that their potential is not limited to financial constraints,” he added.
“The second part of this programme is empowering talent from within Africa by identifying promising employees, investing in their professional development through structured career evolution plans, additional educational support, and mentorship. We aim to equip our people with the skills and opportunities to thrive and grow within the organisation.”
“This programme is not just an investment in individuals. It is an investment in the future of The Gambia. By bridging the gap between education and industry, we are creating a pipeline of skilled professionals who will shape the next generation of our country's growth.”
On her part, the HR, Soma Ann highlighted that “as interns, your commitment to professionalism and discipline is crucial to your learning and development within our company.”
She urged them to continue supporting and advocating for these initiatives. “Let’s remain committed to fostering an environment where young leaders can thrive, innovate and drive positive change.”
Muctarr Darboe, deputy permanent secretary at the Ministry of Higher Education said: “In our rapidly evolving world, the need for visionary, innovative, and empowered leaders has never been greater. This programme is a timely and strategic initiative designed to nurture the talents of our youth, equip them with the skills they need to succeed, and provide them with the opportunities to make meaningful contributions to our society.
“This initiative aligns with our shared goals of fostering growth, innovation, and progress in the education sector. On behalf of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology, I would like to express our full support for AFRICELL's commitment to this noble cause. We are confident that the future leaders programme will open doors for countless young minds, empowering them to take on leaders' roles in various sectors.”
Olimatou Jammeh, a beneficiary student, thanked their mentors, trainers, universities and everyone involved in making the programme a reality. “Thank you for believing in us. Your guidance and support will be the foundation of our success. To my fellow beneficiaries, let us make the most of this journey, let us push boundaries, challenge ourselves, and become the Future Leaders we are meant to be.
