It is a well known concept that security is essential for individual well-being and societal progress, acting as a foundation for a thriving community. It is such that it serves as a foundation on which all other progresses are anchored.

In light of this, police play a lead role in not only maintaining law and order, but also ensuring public safety, and upholding the rule of law. These values are crucial for any country’s progress. Their functions in respect of the above mentioned facts are there for all to see.

Police serve as the first line of defense against crime, respond to emergencies, and work to create a sense of security within communities.

Thus, we salute all loyal serving men and women in the country for their dedication and resolve to serve The Gambia.

In our Thursday edition, we ran a story in which The Gambia Police Forces (GPF) held a passing out parade for its new intakes 2024-2025 at a colourful ceremony held at the Never Again Memorial Arch in Banjul.

Graced by Gambian leader, H.E. Adama Barrow, the event marks another historic moment in the GPF’s history, passing-out a record over one thousand three hundred and thirty-three (1,333) recruits. This number, according to officials, is the largest single intake in the history of the force.

We first commend the high command of the Gambia Police Force on this laudable move, which is part of their broader resolve to have enough personnel to man their stations across the country in ensuring law and order in the country.

Kudos also goes to the newly enlisted police for their courage, dedication and resolve to serve their country.

Let them always remember that security provides the stability and peace of mind necessary for individuals and communities to flourish. When people feel safe and protected, they are more likely to engage in social interactions, pursue education and careers, and contribute to the economy.

They should also put at the back of their minds that policing is a noble profession, as the reward for one serving personnel, is enormous both here and hereafter.

The various aspects of areas they’ve undergone during their training from drill, policing manual, martial arts, riot, weapon, and firing, would significantly help them greatly in daily routine.

As they get set for their deployment to various communities across the country, they should always exercise tolerance, stay humble and promote respect for diversity and equality irrespective of gender, age, ability, ethnicity, and religious beliefs.

It is true that no institution can provide all what their employers need. In the face of growing challenges, they should embrace resilience, be committed and humble, God willingly they will overcome their challenges.
