Liver cancer is a growing health burden in the country with no end in sight to its devastating consequence on the population. The trend at which the disease is trending is alarming.

It is also said that the commonest cause of liver cancer is Hepatitis B, which is very rampant nowadays.

This indeed for a change of attitude and ensure early screening to avoid future consequences.

The disease is a growing problem in the country as seen in the past years, where the country lost more than 1000 young Gambian men, who succumbed to deadly disease.

A health official revealed that liver disease is the most-commonest cancer among the adult population in this country.

Dr. Cherno Jallow made this revelation on Thursday during commemorations marking -Liver Disease Awareness Day held at the Medical School Conference Hall, Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital.

Organised by the National Gl and Liver Disease Center (NGILD-EFSTH), in collaboration with the Global Liver Institute (GLI) and other stakeholders, the event seeks to raise more awareness and galvanise political support to help curb the growing trend of its complications in the country.

In The Gambia, officials explained liver cancer is the third after breast and cervical cancers.

Around the globe, cancer has become a global health issue of concern given the associated increase in mortality and disability caused by it.

There has been a sharp increase in breast, cervical, liver and even prostate cancer cases in many developing countries, of which The Gambia is not an exception.

This has put many developing countries knowing the health burden it causes to the national economy.

According to officials, the alarming rate of liver cancer based on their study, calls for universal precautionary measures and change of lifestyle.

At the event officials also raised alarm over the sharp increase in the use of tattoos, especially young girls or even ladies and in most cases they would share the same equipment to do this beautification on their bodies.

Speaker after speaker at the event outlined for more political commitment in view of the growing trend of this deadly disease in the country.

And the saddest part is that it is claiming the lives of young people who are the future leaders of the country.

Similarly, we call for early screening and timely diagnosis to manage it on time. If late or delay in screening may lead to fatalities.

Let’s all act and together we can defeat cancers in the country.
