GOOD MORNING MR PRESIDENT: Independence, Ramadan and Lent: A Sacred Convergence for National Renewal

Feb 23, 2026, 10:58 AM

Mr President, the 61st Independence Anniversary of our beloved nation arrived with rare and powerful symbolism. This year, 18th February did not stand alone. It coincided with the commencement of the Holy Month of Ramadan for our Muslim brothers and sisters, and the sacred season of Lent for our Christian community.

That convergence was more than a calendar coincidence. It carried a profound message.

Independence represents political freedom — the moment in 1965 when The Gambia claimed her sovereign destiny. Ramadan and Lent represent spiritual discipline — seasons when believers restrain themselves, purify their intentions, and renew their commitment to righteousness.

Together, they send a clear signal: Freedom has to be anchored in moral responsibility.

Mr President, our founding fathers secured political independence. But every generation is required to secure ethical independence — freedom from corruption, injustice, division, and indiscipline.

Ramadan teaches self-control, charity, and compassion. Lent teaches sacrifice, reflection, and repentance. Both teach accountability before God.

As a nation deeply rooted in faith and tolerance, The Gambia has long stood as a model of interfaith harmony. Muslims and Christians celebrate together, mourn together, and build together. In many Gambian homes, Ramadan and Lent are observed within the same extended families. That unity is not accidental; it is a national asset.

At a time when parts of the world are fractured by religious intolerance, The Gambia stands as proof that faith could unite rather than divide.

Mr President, that alignment offers your administration a powerful moment for national recalibration.

As we have celebrated 61 years of independence, we are compelled to ask:

• Are we managing public resources with integrity?

• Are we protecting the vulnerable?

• Are we building institutions that would outlive personalities?

• Are we creating opportunities for our youth?

Independence without discipline weakens nations. Spiritual discipline without national purpose limits impact. But when political freedom meets moral renewal, transformation becomes possible.

That moment presents an opportunity to declare 2026 not merely as another anniversary year, but as a year of National Ethical Recommitment.

The message to the Gambian people is clear: We are one nation. We are one people. We are united in faith. And we are accountable — both to history and to God.

May that sacred convergence inspire leadership grounded in humility, service, and justice! May it deepen our unity!  And may it guide The Gambia towards a future where freedom and integrity walk hand-in-hand.

Finally Mr President, Government should apply some strict measures to prevent market vendors and supermarket owners from unscrupulously increasing prices of basic commodities (with impunity) during Ramadan and Lent.  Since there is no price control, commodities are being sold at exorbitant prices.

Good day!
