As the day March 27 approaches, it is good that politicians shelve their political differences and interests, work together, and forge ahead in national interest.
We cannot agree on issues 100% for a constitution to be ratified and approved; we can move one as long as, among other things, it highlights people's interests such as the two-term limit for a president, one must be elected with over 50% of the votes cast, and the voting right of Gambiansin the Diaspora.
Relatedly we would commend ECOWAS, the AU and the UN diplomat Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas for his support to The Gambia to get a new constitution.
Mr President, your congratulations message to the UDP leader has diffused political tension in the country, which is good omen for pluralism, democracy and peaceful co-existence.Politics should not create enmity and disunity among us.In politics, as well as in sport, there must ultimately be a winner or loser.
Leaders of political parties, the civil society activists, religious leaders and the media should discuss the draft constitution and issues of national interest.
Also, regarding the election body, there should be appointment of a credible person who must not belong to any political party to head the IEC, after the retirement of Alieu Momar Njie on March 27 this year.
It is also essential that government regulate the social media by introducing laws that deal with people posting fake news, using abusive languages or seditious comments in social media.
Economic conditions
Mr President, we expect you to do more for Gambians, as unemployment is high in the country. Your government should take strategic measures to create job opportunities for the labour force. In The Gambia today, the youth represent 60% of the population hence have the number to make decisive vote.
Government should also encourage lowering of prices to cushion the high cost of living, especially with regard to food commodities.
There is a need also for Central Bank of The Gambia dealing with foreign exchange to monitor the parallel market against hyping or upping exchange rates by vendors in the streets. The Gambia Ports Authority should also always give clearance priority to essential goods and food commodities to avoid importers paying very expensive demurrage, which harshly reflects on the prices of goods and food commodities on sale in the country.
Another worrying concern is that local transport drivers apply a game or have indulged in the habit of doubling fares - sometimesit is thrice - just for one destination, which is very unfair.
Thus, there is a need to strengthen Gambia Transport Service Corporation for people to get easy access to transport.
By and large, security is still a challenge although the police are doing a good job by arresting armed robbers, sometimes with arms and money. The security officers should be given more transports or vehicles and equipment to improve their logistics and regular patrols.
We cannot but also applaud you for doing your best to build good infrastructures in the country. In the same vein, water and electricity supply and internet facility need improvement.Government should also work hard to eliminate irregular migration and promote agriculture.
Finally Mr President, it is essential that peace, unity and oneness prevail in the country, particularly among politicians in this holy month of Ramadan and Lent and after.
Good day!
