The Gambia U-20 youth national team is making the whole country proud in the ongoing Africa Cup of
Nations tournament currently underway in Egypt.
The dedication, stunning and spectacular performance put up by the Gambian side is not a
surprise at all if one goes through the country’s
youth football.
"
The Gambia is known for producing some of the
finest youth stars on the continent. This reminds us
about Ousman Jallow, Tijan Jaiteh and the Shona
who were part of the country’s U-17 National team
that first won a continental youth championship for
the country in 2005.
Despite the small size of the country, these players
with courage and determination defied the odds by
defeating big names in the world of football.
"
Football is synonymous with investment. And the
only way to make gains as a country is to invest in
the country’s football development.
"
This investment will not only be in infrastructural
development, but also human resources to boost the
country’s rankings. With the ongoing trend and right
environment, there is hope for the country’s football.
"
On Tuesday, The Gambia U-20 youth national team
was rewarded, appreciated and recognised for their
outstanding performances in the ongoing
tournament.
"
We thus call on the government to open up avenues
where youth could tap and exploit their skills.
Generally, youths in the country are very talented
and skillful.
However, they only need a push to make it happen.
"
Government has to be mindful of the fact that youth
play a critical role in the development of any nation.
And their involvement in sports is among their
avenues they could uplift and promote business to
this part of Africa.
"We therefore extend our sincere admiration and
commendation to the U-20 team from the players to
the coaching staff and all those made it happen.
This is indeed a big plus as far as the country’s
football development is concerned. Being one of the
two teams in the ongoing Afcon tournament that won
all the three group matches without conceding a
goal, speaks volume about their dedication,
commitment and teamwork.
We once again commend The Gambia U-20 players,
coaching staff and technical side for their efforts in
promoting the country’s name thus far. This is not a
one man show, but a collective effort and together
we all sail to the Promised Land.
