Commuters and hike in transport fares!

Feb 25, 2026, 11:49 AM

Transport fares within the Greater Banjul Area and parts of the West Coast Region are becoming a nightmare due to the unpredictable hike in transport fares. It has gone to a stage now travelling from one to another requires second thought. This is because commercial drivers are just unnecessarily increasing their fares attributing it to a hike in pump price of gas oil and diesel.

Whatever the case, even if that is the case, the little addition sometimes is one dalasi difference or two dalasi and that should not be a justification to increase the fares to a point that many would find hard.

We are cognizant of the challenging period we are faced with. From rising prices of basic food commodities, house rents, school fees and a host of other challenges and now transport fares.

It is sad that the manner and way some drivers are increasing their fares is just crazy. Imagine from Brikama to Serrekunda, which used to be D30, now some van and even Gele Gele drivers are charging people D50.

This left some commuters with no option but to pay just to get to this final destination.

Sometime last year, the GPF issued a stern warning against this unlawful practice, which unfairly burdens commuters. Fast-forward, it appears the trend is becoming a norm with one authority condemning it.

This comes after some unscrupulous drivers on the Serekunda-Brikama route, unilaterally increased their fares from D50 to D100—well above the approved rates.

And that ungodly practice is the order of the day especially during rush hour or closing time.

It’s time to show compassion and love.

We cannot as a nation continue to feed on each other like parasites. Patriotism calls for the love and devotion to one’s country.

If the current trend manifesting our town is anything to go by, The Gambia is still far from the promised land.

Let’s put at the back of mind that the government cannot intervene in all these areas just, citizens have to take the lead. But it appears we are losing focus on that aspect while civil servants on low grades continue to pay the price.

It is disheartening to see how some commuters struggle on a daily basis just due to the unpredictable hike in transport fares, especially tax drivers. It is high time relevant authorities intervene to avert this exploitation.

We called on the police high command especially officers stationed on roads and checkpoints to monitor compliance and take appropriate action against violators.

This also reminds us of the need for the public to serve as whistleblowers. If we continue to allow or promote this unnecessary exploitation, then time will come when citizens would find it difficult to move about. This is because every driver would just price the way he or she wants.

And that may in turn hunt us one day. It is better to act now than wait for the whole ordinary citizens to continue to suffer.

Let’s remember that this is affecting countless numbers of commuters on a daily basis. We have to fix things in our country. We cannot wait for others to fix it for us.
