Minister of Youth and Sports Sheriff M.L. Gomez at the weekend presented footballs to various institutions in the country through the National Sports Council (NSC).

The recipients, who received the donation at a presentation ceremony held at the Independence Stadium conference hall in Bakau, included the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports (4 balls), the secretary general of the Gambia Football Association (10 balls), the Chief of Defence Staff of the Gambia Armed Forces (10 balls), the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (10 balls), and each National Sports Council member received 10 balls.

The chairman of the NSC, Sulayman Bun-Njie, who presided over the presentation ceremony on behalf of the Youth and Sports Minister, said the idea behind the Ministry of Youth and Sports’ initiative is to promote grassroots football in the regions.

Bun, a former principal of the Gambia Muslim High School in Banjul, added:  “When the minister received this gift, he felt it necessary to distribute it to various recipients across the regions with the ultimate objective of promoting grassroots football in our regions.”

The initiative followed a series of similar gestures by the country’s sports minister, who recently donated a high quality Player Change Board to the Gambia Football Association.
