State prosecutors have indicted one Lamin Darboe, said to be a corps member of the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSS), on a charge of rape.

He was arraigned on Monday before Justice Amadi of the High Court in Banjul.

Darboe, who denied the allegation, was subsequently refused bail following an objection raised by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mikailu Abdullahi.

Prosecutors accused Darboe of unlawfully having carnal knowledge of a girl without her consent, at Bakau in October 2010.

The accused person, if found guilty, could serve a long prison term, including life imprisonment.

During Monday's proceedings, the state promised to offer a defence lawyer, if the accused cannot secure legal representation.

Meanwhile, the accused was remanded in custody pending determination of the case.

Hearing was adjourned until 7 April 2011.
