The Brikama Magistrates' Court recently convicted and sentenced one Isatou Jammeh, a 30-year-old lady, to a mandatory jail term of 18 months.
This followed her plea of guilty to the charge of concealment of birth.
The charge sheet as presented by the police prosecutor, Sgt 1260 Colley, revealed that the convicted person on 15 September 2010 at Farato village, Kombo South district, in the West Coast Region, concealed the birth of her newly-born child by secretly burying the child at the Briakam Nyambai forest.
In her plea of mitigation, the convict begged the court for forgiveness, saying that she has children and her husband is presently abroad.
Magistrate AK Ceesay in passing sentence stated that after having heard the plea of mitigation of the accused person, and considering the offence committed, the convict deserved punishment.
Consequently, she was sentenced accordingly.
