Mr. Lamin Sanneh, the Governor of Western Region has stressed the need for Brikama Area Council (BAC) Councillors to protect their integrity in whatever situation they may find themselves. He noted that as Councillors their integrity is always at stage, especially, those in the Western Region.
Mr. Sanneh made this statement, while addressing BAC's Councillors during the swearing-in ceremony of one Aja-Fatou-Sonko, at a colourful ceremony held on Wednesday 19th August 2009, at the Red Cross conference hall in Brikama.
Mr. Sanneh underscored the importance of Councillors in society as, according to him, they are entrusted with many social responsibilities by the government of the Gambia.
He noted that consideration was in the pipeline for payment of Councillor's allowance, adding that they should be aware of drastic changes.
He added that "to whom much is given, much is expected and thus councillors are given motivation and much is expected in return".
Governor Sanneh urged Councillors to be pro-active when it comes to projects and solving strategies.
He implored on them not to work for their selfish interest, but for the interest of the electorate and taxpayers.
Mr. Sanneh further urged the Councillors to be mindful of their duties and ensure that they work effectively.
Governor Sanneh also urged Councillors to ensure that their policies are implemented, adding that the staff on the ground must strengthen their efforts to at least 80% so as to give proper and vibrant service delivery to the electorate.
According to him, Councillors should serve as an 'agency' for their people, and thus urged them to be loyal to them.
