Gunjur made perfect start to the 2011 West Coast Region third division qualifiers after beating Farato 1-0 in a well-contested group C encounter played at the Gunjur Nyamina Football Field on Saturday.
The first period was dominated and controlled by Farato, who created numerous goal-scoring opportunities but failed to capitalise on them.
Gunjur, on the other hand, were unable to contain Farato in the early stage of the game, but created few goal-scoring opportunities in the latter part which failed to produce dividends for them and thus the first period ended goalless.
As actions resumed in the second half of the game, Gunjur brought in several fresh legs and mounted heavy pressure on Farato’s defence line with the creation of numerous goal-scoring opportunities. This paid dividends in the 60th minute when striker Momodou Clark Bajo netted the opener from the penalty spot after he was brought down inside Farato’s 18-yard box, which eventually proved to be the winner for Gunjur.
Farato fought back for an equalizer but failed to break through Gunjur’s formidable defence line and thus the game ended 1-0 in favour of Gunjur.
Earlier on Friday, Black &White of Berending beat Mandinaring by the same score line in group A at the Mandinaring Football Field.
