Wassu Gambia Kafo (WGK), an international non-profit organization promoting cooperation and development between The Gambia and Spain, on Tuesday donated materials to the School of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences of the University of The Gambia.

The items donated included laptops, projectors, medical books, stethoscopes and blood pressure machines.

The Director of Research Park of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) in Spain, Professor Jordi Marguet, did the presentation on behalf of the donor.

Wassu Gambia Kafo was established in 1999 to promote health, research and education between The Gambia and Spain.

According to officials, the organization has been supporting the health and agriculture sectors and the Community Based Medical Programmes (CBMP) with teaching and learning materials.

Speaking at the handing over ceremony, Professor Jordi Marguet said the donated items were aimed at strengthening the capability of the students and their institutions.

He said the gesture would complement government’s efforts and reinforce the memorandum of understanding signed between the two institutions.

He added that from 2008 to date, Wassu Gambia Kafo has donated items to health institutions in The Gambia amounting to D12, 547,960.00 million.

“Since the establishment of Wassu Gambia Kafo (WGK) in 1999, it has always been committed to preventing FGM in The Gambia through the training of health personnel and students in the country with the support of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the UN agency, who has recently joined the project,” Professor Marguet said.

The vice-chancellor of the UTG, Professor Muhammadou Kah, said faculty members of the UTG welcomed the donation.

He spoke on the need for a more sustainable partnership between the students from the Research Park of the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the University of The Gambia.
