Speaking to this reporter shortly after the cleansing exercise, the chairman of the KM disaster management committee, Musa Mendy, commended the PIA members and other volunteers for their participation.

According to him, the move will reduce the menace of mosquito prevalent in the area.

“Similar exercises were conducted in other parts of the Municipality for the purpose of mitigating disaster in the country,” Mr Mendy said.

He appealed to the community of Imam Nfansu Street of Bakau to not litter the already cleaned gutters, for their own health.

The PIA unit teacher coordinator of Gambia Muslim Senior Secondary School, Mr Hamzat, said the main purpose of the exercise was to show the community the work of the PIA.

According to him, the exercise is a work of voluntarism which they do to complement government’s efforts at achieving healthy nation.

“We are also doing this exercise to contribute to the national development of the country and also to build strong partnership with National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), especially with the Kanifing Municipality and Banjul City Council Disaster Management Committees,” he said.
