The United Democratic Party in a letter sent to this paper yesterday has clarified the recent media report that Mr. Momodou Lamin Touray, former Campaign Manager of the opposition PPP was a member of the United Democratic Party, describing the report as a deliberate calculation meant to mislead the Gambian people.
According to the UDP, Mr. Momodou Lamin Touray, in a recent interview captioned "UDP Campaign Manager Joins APRC", has confessed to have switched to the ruling APRC.
Mr. Touray, UDP stated, has not been a registered member of the United Democratic Party.
"As he himself said in the interview, he was a militant and stalwart of the Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) and worked with the UDP in the alliance of the two parties formed during the Presidential elections," the UDP statement added.
The UDP further clarified that with the subsequent creation of the National Alliance for Democracy and Development (NADD), in 2005; Mr. Touray became a member of NADD and stayed a member until his reported shift to the APRC.
"He has no claim to UDP membership," the statement said.
The UDP statement added that Touray was put up by the NADD party as a candidate against the UDP candidate, Mr. Lamin R Darboe, in the Kombo East Constituency By-elections in 2006.
"The Campaign Manager of the UDP is Mr. Femi Peters, who has absolutely no intention of shifting to the APRC," the statement concluded.
