Today Newspaper Boss Appears in Court

The proprietor of Today newspaper Abdul Hamid Adiamoh was yesterday arraigned before principal Magistrate Buba Jawo of the Kanifing Magistrates' Court charged with sedition intention, contrary to section 52 subsection A (c) of the Criminal Procedure Code of the laws of The Gambia.

According to the particulars of the alleged offence, the accused Abdul Hamid Adiamoh on or about 15th July 2008, at the Kanifing Municipality printed and distributed or reproduces any children dodge from school to pick scrap metal. He denied the charge.

The defence counsel Lamin Camara grave with the court to grant his client bail hence the alleged offence is not punishable with death or imprisonment for life. He further stressed that in tried law the offence is a bailable one and urged the court to grant the accused person bail.

Lawyer Camara profusely stated it is obvious that the police have completed their investigation in to the case hence preferring the charged against the accused person. He said looking at the nature of the case it is not possible for the accused to tamper with the case.

The prosecution for their part did not object to the defence Counsel application for bail.

Subsequently, the court granted the accused person bail in the sum of D200, 000 with a Gambian surety in large amount.

The case was at length adjourned until 10th September 2008.
