The facebook syndrome

Jun 20, 2012, 1:36 PM

Facebook - a popular name among those who are so much into it - is one of the fastest growing social networking websites on the internet.

Each day countless numbers of people flock to Facebook.com and keep in contact with friends, as well as to meet new people.

A lot of people who have accounts in Facebook have become addicted and are now using more of their time to socialize with other people, amidst the distance and lack of time.

Yet, even if a community like Facebook has numerous advantages, it also proves to have certain disadvantages as well.

For instance, on many occasions, we have made mention of the issue of people leaving their important jobs only to go and sit at the computer, using several precious hours on Facebook.

For God’s sake, do your work first as expected, and then you are free to do any other thing after that. What is more disheartening is that you get to certain offices, even the receptionists that are supposed to attend to people will be busy facebooking and the only thing they would say to the visitor or customer is: “sit and wait”.

While you are waiting thinking they are busy with some office work, they would instead be clinging onto facebook chatting comfortably. This should stop.

There are many disadvantages in using Facebook.

Many people believe that Facebook has a lot of advantages, and is convenient to use. But they ignore all the disadvantages that come with it.

An excess of anything is bad, which is also true for Facebook.

One of the disadvantages of using Facebook is weak eyesight - staring at a computer screen for long can weaken your eyesight.

Facebook can only be accessed through the internet and, if you use it too much, then your eyesight will gravely be affected.

Facebook also provides many games and applications that require you to focus on the screen for a long time. Also your eyesight can get worse if you use Facebook for too long.

Being time consuming, Facebook addiction can be construed as a disadvantage, because of inordinate amounts of time spent on the website, and self-imposed time limits aren’t set.

Because of the odd side of Facebook, it has been blocked intermittently in several countries.

It has also been banned in many places of work to discourage employees from wasting time using the service.

Thus, one area which is worth consolidating on is self-regulation.

A very serious issue concerning the internet in general is that there are thousands of pornographic sites on the internet that can be easily found, which can be a detrimental factor in letting children use the internet.
