The president of the Gambia Lawn Tennis Association has confirmed to Pointsport that three Gambian tennis professionals have just participated in the Confederation of the African Tennis Championship 2010 in Tripoli, Libya.
Sheriff Jammeh said the tennis trios were Basuruwa Conteh, Seedy Bojang and Buba Drammeh, who performed well in the championship that ended on 15 November in Tripoli, organised every two years by the African tennis body.
“I can confirm to you that we selected three tennis players from the association to represent the country in this championship which started November 7th in Libya. The group was headed by Basuruwa Conteh,” Jammeh, who is also a bureau member of the Gambia National Olympic Committee, told Pointsport in an interview at the Independence Stadium in Bakau at the weekend.
This is the first time that the Gambia Lawn Tennis Association is represented in the Confederation of African Tennis Championship, a situation the association’s president put down to lack of finance.
The Gambian tennis players’ trip to Libya, according to Mr Jammeh, was funded by the Gambia Lawn Tennis Association and the Libyan Tennis Federation, who contributed 75 per cent of the cost of the return air tickets.
Meanwhile, the trio are expected back home on November 18 via Dakar.
