Gambia Swimming & Aquatic Sports Association (GSASA) at the weekend held its 3rd Regional Open Water Swimming in Bakau (KSMR).
More than twenty registered junior and senior swimmers from the region (KSMR) contested in the daylong event that brought together a host of several prominent figures.
The Technical Director, Cherno Krubally, on behalf of the association’s president, thanked all those that were present, particularly the swimmers and the technical team of GSASA.
He spoke on the importance of the competition, saying they registered success as the target ages were reached (14-25 yrs).
He added that the competition was as well to get the 5 best swimmers that will represent The Gambia in the annual Goree-Dakar Open Water Swimming Competition in September. This, he said, is an annual programme that captured the attention of international Open Water Swimming events. The distances are 5Km and 7Km respectively.
The 2nd Vice President of the GSASA and the regional coordinator of the KSMR said the main motive of the regional competitions is to scout out for good swimmers that will represent their various regions in the coming National Open Water Swimming Championship 2012.
“This will serve as a springboard for the identification of grassroots swimmers who will be trained and exposed to all forms of local and international activities in accordance with FINA rules of OWS,” he said.
He further explained that only the 10 best swimmers will be representing each region. That is the best five junior and five best senior swimmers.

This will count a total number of 40 swimmers for the National Open Water Swimming Championship 2012.
