The championship brings together 12 zones namely, the2013 Super Nawetan champions Serrekunda West, runners-up Brikama, Manjai, Serrekunda East, Banjul, Sukuta, Bakau, Brufut, Barra, Essau and Mayamba Serrekunda Central, Lamin and Gunjur, who will be vying for the 2014 championship title.
The championship produces good football and attracts more spectators than the national domestic leagues; also generates more funds than the national leagues.
In past years, the national domestic league clubs and national team coaches use the Super Nawetan to scout for good players, and for the national teams.
Serrekunda West won the 2013 Super Nawetan zonal football championship after beating the 2012 champions Brikama 1-0 in a well-contested finals played at the Independence Stadium.
Hawks’
prolific-striker Musa Bangura netted the only goal for Serrekunda West in the
dying minutes of the game, to clinch their first-ever Super Nawetan zonal
football championship title since the inception of the championship in the 90s.
