Soldier, husband found dead at Hamza barracks

Officers of the Gambia Armed Forces in collaboration with sister security services have begun investigations into the gruesome death of one Mariama Camara, a soldier who works with the Republican National Guard under the State Guard Battalion, and her husband, Alpha Jallow.

The couple, whose death happened in their room at the Hamza Barracks along the

Banjul-Serrekunda Highway
, were reportedly found lying dead.

When this reporter visited the armed forces headquarters in Banjul on Monday, Major Omar Bojang, the army public relations officer, confirmed the deaths of the couple, and said the incident happened in the early hours of Saturday morning.

He explained that the death of the couple, which took many by surprise, happened as a result of gunshot wounds.

According to Major Bojang, the bodies of the couple are currently at the mortuary at the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital in Banjul.

He added that the armed forces are working with other sister security services to ascertain the cause of the incident.

“Right now, investigations are ongoing and after the completion, the body of the late Mariama’s husband will be handed over to his family for burial, while Mariama will be accorded the usual military burial,” Major Bojang told this reporter.

The late Mariama Camara is a native of Essau village in the North Bank Region.

Her late husband is said to come from Latrikunda Sabiji.
