Respect for the law and adhering to the dictates of law are a prerequisite for social justice and peaceful coexistence in society.
For the rule of law to be seen to prevail in the country, the due process of the law must be seen to be done in all cases, even those that might appear to be uncomfortable to deal with.
No society can make meaningful progress without adherence to the rule of law. The rule of law may be an instrument of stability, an atmosphere which is a condition precedent for any meaningful development to take place in any given society.
The law and its rule is an instrument fashioned by society for the purpose of achieving harmonious adjustment of human relations, by eliminating social tensions and conflicts.
It must thus assume a dynamic role in the process of transformation of our community.
The significance of the rule of law and respect for human rights in the promotion of peace, stability and national development are very essential elements that cannot be underrated.
We must therefore emphasise the need for us to respect the rule of law. In fact, people should be made to have more confidence in the legal system.
Respecting the rights of victims and the accused persons is as essential element that needs serious consideration in the pursuit of justice.
Another issue that comes to mind is the much-talked about Gambianizing the bench. To us, this is very important and more efforts should be made towards achieving 100 percent Gambians manning our bench sooner rather than later.
As Gambians, we must be ready to take charge of our own destiny now!
