ROC continues to boost heath sector

Dec 29, 2011, 2:54 PM

Once again we recognise the support recently rendered to the country’s health sector by the Government of the Republic of China on Taiwan (ROC).

They have donated US$124,600 to the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare meant for sponsoring of seven Gambia doctors, who are currently pursuing their post-graduate degree in Ghana.

Over the years, Taiwan has made significant strides in support of the key sectors of the Gambian economy such as education, health, agriculture, and infrastructure development.

This gesture once more signals the cordial ties between the two countries and their peoples.

We learnt that the students would soon complete their studies, and come back to boost health care delivery in the country.

In the meantime, we encourage the students to make the best use of the money provided by the Republic of China on Taiwan and the Gambia government, while in Ghana.

It is undisputable that upon their return to serve the nation, the doctors would contribute immensely to quality health service delivery in the country.

Considering the importance of health, we see this latest development gesture from our Taiwanese brothers as timely and significant.

The doctor-patient ratio in the country is too high, and the training of more Gambian doctors would, no doubt, reduce the burden on the few doctors currently serving in the system.

Maintaining and strengthening cordial and strong ties between The Gambia and ally nations like Taiwan would in no small measure boost the rapid attainment of our national development aspirations.

Once more, we commend the Republic of China on Taiwan for their continuing support, both financial and moral support, to the country’s development drive.
