Physical education teachers of schools in the Greater Banjul zone are onto the pitch to determine which among their schools will represent them in the upcoming Gambia Secondary School Sports Association Super Championship for both boys and girls.

Both senior and junior secondary schools are expected to compete to select among them three best teams, in a form of knockout tournaments, for football, volleyball and basketball in a three-week period.

Speaking to sports reporters last Wednesday ahead of the tournaments, Augustus Mendy, regional sports coordinator, said his committee has set the ball rolling for football qualifiers for both junior and senior secondary schools on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.

He used the opportunity to remind sports teachers and students to exercise discipline and sportsmanship as well as respect the rules of the game.

The beginning of the junior school qualifiers was marked with low turnouts of the participating teams.

Latrikunda Sabiji defeated Kanifing East 2-nill while St. Augustine’s Upper Basic School won Rosekally International 2-nill.

Sukuta, Ndow’s and Kombo Kerewan failed to turn up mainly due to their students’ engagement on exams. As a result Bakau, Ndow’s and Latrikunda (LK) respectively will join Latrikunda Sabiji and St. Augustine’s for the next stage of the qualifiers.

None of the female matches was possible because many schools failed to fill in their players.

The volleyball-qualifying matches are slated to start on Thursday 26 May 2012.
