The 2011-2012 Gambia Football Association (GFA) division one league champions Real De Banjul have been crowned champions of the 2012 GFA Super Cup, after a 1-0 win over the 2011-2012 FA Cup champions, Gamtel, in tightly contested game played at the Independence Stadium in Bakau on Sunday.
Real De Banjul enjoyed the multitude of ball possession in the game and cause serious assaults in front of Gamtel’s goalmouth, but failed to capitalize on their goal-scoring opportunities.
Gamtel on the other hand relied on counterattacks and created a few goal-scoring opportunities, but also failed to utilize on them; thus the first half ended goalless.
Upon resumption of the game, Real De Banjul continued where they left off in the first half, and mounted pressure on Gamtel’s defence line, creating numerous goal-scoring opportunities.
Their efforts paid dividends in the 67th minute of the match, when defender Buba Sanneh netted the opener from a stunning header from Baboucarr Trawally’s free kick to give Real De Banjul the lead, which eventually proved to be the winner for the city boys.
Gamtel brought in several fresh legs to boost their striking departments, and fought back for an equalizer and some scoring opportunities, but could not break through Real De Banjul’s solid defence line; and thus the game ended 1-0 in favour of Real De Banjul.
