Real de Banjul Football Club are the new kings of the 2013/2014 Gambia Football Federation League Division One after an emphatic 2-0 victory against Hawks, according to a press release issued by club President Willy Abraham.
Real’s win on Saturday ensured that the City Boys needed its close title challengers Gamtel, to either lose or draw their encounter with Samger the following day and they did just that after falling to a 3-2 defeat against their relegation-threatened opponents.
Real secured a third consecutive win at the Father Gough Sports Complex in Manjai, after goals from defender Bubacarr Sanneh and striker Ebrima Sanneh sent it seven points clear at the top of the league.
With the victory, coach Mattar M’Boge’s side accumulated 40 points from 20 games, seven ahead of second placed Gamtel, with two games to spare.
In the process, Real have also set a new record for the number of goals scored to win the championship – 36, and could take this to an all-time high and set a new record for the Gambian football league era, if they win their two remaining games against Wallidan and Gambia Ports Authority respectively.
It is the City Boys’ second league title in two years, thus increasing its trophy cabinet to 12 league titles.
