The Point has learnt from official sources that Professor Ousman Nyan, head of School of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences at the University of the Gambia, has been appointed as the new Chief Medical Director at the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital.

The appointment was effective last Monday.

Prof. Nyang replaces Dr. Mamadi Cham, who has been re-deployed to his previous post as the Director of Health Services at the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

Confirming the development to this paper, Baboucarr Ngum, spokesperson of the RVTH, said: “Yes, I can confirm that Prof. Dr. Ousman Nyan was appointed as the new Chief Medical Director of RVTH.”

Asked by this reporter what the recent development means to the country’s main referral hospital, Ngum, who spent almost his entire working life in the health sector, described the move as a major boost for the RVTH and the health sector in general. This, he added, will boost the morale of the staff.

It should be noted that the position of Chief Medical Director of the RVTH has seen many faces come and go, key among them Dr Tamsir Mbowe and Dr Mariatou Jallow, both former ministers of Health.
