Observing Yawmul Ashura

Dec 14, 2010, 1:17 PM

Muslims in The Gambia will tomorrow join the rest of the Muslim Ummah to observe Yawmul Ashura, the 10th day of the Muslim New Year. This is a great day for Muslims.

In fact, the day is very important one in the Islamic calendar. All the days and times of prayer are good, but some are especially emphasised by Islam, and the tenth day of Muharram is a blessed day for Muslims to pray to Allah.

We pray that the Almighty Allah will answer our humble prayers, and reward those who adhere to his laws in the coming year.

We pray that God will make the Muslim new year a successful year for all Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

Prayers and fasting are essential during this period, and we encourage all Muslims to strictly follow the Sunnah of the holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

This is also a period for forgiveness, and we strongly recommend people to forgive each other and reconcile.

This is the time that, as Muslims, we need to increase our worship with prayers, and giving out charity to those in need.

It is also a time for reflection on our actions, and to repent for our sins, thus seeking Allah’s forgiveness and protection.

The significance of the day is for Muslims to fast, recite the holy Quran and forgive each other.

We also encourage people to visit their loved ones and relatives, and strengthen the relations.
