Niamina West by-election set for 16 April

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has announced that it will conduct a by-election on Thursday 16 April 2020 to fill the vacant seat of National Assembly Member (NAM) for Niamina West Constituency in the Janjanbureh Administrative area.

This follows the demise of former Niamina West NAM Honourable Demba Sowe. The NAM passed away while on an official trip to Morocco on 24 January 2020. He was 40.

The parliamentarian was a member of the opposition Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC).

The late National Assembly Member for Niamina was on Friday 31 January 2020, laid in State at the Legislative House in Banjul.

The occasion was attended by the vice president, Ministers, National Assembly Members, party leaders, family members, well-wishers, and a cross section of society.

Meanwhile, IEC said nomination of candidates will be held on Monday 30 March 2020. As a result, nomination forms were being issued out to prospective candidates from yesterday, Monday 2 March to Monday 30 March 2020.

The forms are free of charge and can be collected from Election House at Bertil Harding Highway or IEC Janjanbureh Regional Office.
