It is good that The Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (TANGO) recently held their annual general meeting. Other NGOs should learn from the good example of their parent body to organize annual general meetings.
This kind of meeting will clear certain doubts people have about NGOs, and it will serve as a forum where people will frankly discuss about issues affecting their welfare, and the operations of the NGOs.
We have to understand that NGOs have come to serve people, but it is sad that there are certain organizations in the country wherein even the communities they are serving do not know what they are doing.
It is the duty of the NGOs not only to be accountable to the donors, but also to the people they serve for the sake of transparency;if not the role of the NGOs will be misunderstood, and we know that they play a very important role in society, and complement the government’s efforts in many areas of development.
People have to support NGOs that are development-oriented, and forget the briefcase NGOs. However, we must commend the efforts of a greater number of our NGOs for complementing government’s efforts in nation building. We have seen in many areas in the country the impact made by certain NGOs in term of development.
This is the only meansof bringing development to the doorstep of the people.
