The First Lady of the Republic of The Gambia, Madam Zainab Yahya Jammeh last Friday presided over the presentation of cash prices and gifts to the first born babies of the year 2010, at the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital (RVTH) in Banjul.
The First Lady in her capacity as the Chief Patroness of the Operation Save a Baby, was accompanied to the ceremony by Sira Wally Ndow-Njie, the Minister of Energy, Marie Saine Firdous, the Attorney General and the Minister of Justice, Dr. Abubacarr Gaye Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Fatoumatta Jahumpa Ceesay, the former Speaker of the National Assembly and Tombong Saidy, the Chairman of the initiative, among others.
Shortly after the presentation of the sponsored price, the First Lady Madam Jammeh also gave a cash price of D20, 000 to each of the first babies of the year 2010.
Trust Bank sponsored D15, 000 and baby materials to the first baby of the year, the Gambia International Airline (GIA) sponsored D15, 000 and baby materials to the first baby girl of the year, while Gamtel Gamcel sponsored D15000 and baby materials to the first baby boy of the year and Qcell also sponsored D15000 and baby materials to first twins of the year.
According to the official of the operation save the baby committee, from the said amount, ten thousand dalasis will be saved in various banks for each child to sponsored their education, and the remaining D5000 will be given to their parents.
Awa Jarju of Mariama Kunda had the first baby, Tida Chart of Farafenni had the first baby girl of the year, Mariama Njie of Old Jeshwang had the first baby boy of the year and Mariama Jatta of Bakau had the first twins of the year all boys.
