The new Wellingara Market constructed at a tune of D3.5m was on Tuesday 29th June 2010 handed over by the Contractor (IKAM Construction Enterprise) through GAMWORKS agency to Brikama Area Council.
Speaking at the handing over ceremony held at the grounds of the new market complex, Mariama Bah-Saine, Ward Councilor expressed delight at the handing over of the new market. Mrs. Bah-Saine noted that the council is committed to provide development projects to communities in the form of road rehabilitation projects, market etc.
Mrs. Bah-Saine commended GAMWORKS agency, Consultant and the Contractor for their continuous collaboration since the outset of the project.
While hailing the community of Wellingara for the support accorded to the Contractor, Councilor Bah-Saine called for the proper and timely payment of dues by vendors.
For his part, Mr. Sarjo Jah, the Finance and Administration Director of GAMWORKS, who deputised for the Director General gave an overview of the entire project initiated in 2007. Mr. Jah noted that the market is constructed at the tune of D3.5m and that Brikama Area Council has contributed D383, 000.00 (three hundred and eighty-three thousand Dalasi). He hailed the council for their unflinching support to the project.
The Chairman of Brikama Area Council, Mr. Sunkary Badjie reiterated his appreciation to the efforts of GAMWORKS, Consultant and the Contractor for the timely completion of the project. Mr. Badjie commended the community of Wellingara through the Alkalo and urged for the timely and proper payment of dues, rates and taxes to enable his Council deliver projects to communities.
The Consultant, Mr. Omar Camara and Contractor, Mr. Samuel B. Lawson of the project, all expressed delight at the smooth completion of the construction of the new market. They further hailed the Council, the community and GAMWORKS for their support.
On his part, the Chief Executive Officer of the Council, Mr. Momodou Jallow promised that the structure of the new market would be expanded to desirable standards. Mr. Jallow noted that allocation of canteens would be strictly based on rules and regulations, which include compulsory participation in monthly cleaning exercise.
The keys of the market were handed over by the Contractor, Mr. Samuel B. Lawson to Mr. Jah of GAMWORKS, who further handed over the keys to Mr.Sunkary Badjie, the Chairman of Brikama Area Council.
Other speakers included the Alkalo of Wellingara, Mr. Babu Ndure, the Chairman of Wellingara Village Development Committee, Mr. Samba Bah and Mrs. Aja Binta Kanyi Kombo North Women District Mobiliser.
Mr. Modou Jonga, acting Public Relations Officer of Brikama Area Council chaired the ceremony, which was attended by Councilors and staff of the Council and a cross section of the community.
