All indications point to the fact that discipline, the foundation for morals and academic development, has broken down in many schools around the country.
Smoking of cigarettes or, even worst, truancy and absenteeism, and the care-free attitude of some parents all contribute to this menace.
Our schools, it is pertinent for us to note, are the moulding and training grounds for the future generation.
Therefore, if these schools are not providing the right training, then both parents must take their rightful position in assisting children to adopt the right attitude, and to instil in them good behaviour in order to ensure that we have a better future generation.
Take, for instance, the use of mobile phones in the classroom, when the teacher is busy on the blackboard. This is not in the least acceptable!
Ideally, parents are expected to find time to be close to their children, and be communicating with them frequently.
It’s even better if parents are able to help children with their homework, and to talk to their children about worldly issues, so as to make them worldly-wise.
While many tend to wonder about the actual cause of the lack of discipline in both our homes and schools, others ascribe it to the infiltration of Western culture.
Still others hold the belief that several parents do tend to let loose their children, by allowing them to move anywhere, everywhere that they feel like going to, without proper monitoring.
Actually, all these factors, plus a lot more, are responsible for the perceived lack of discipline in our schools.
In any case, it is important that parents, the schools and society at large all give due attention to children, and play their part effectively in their upbringing.
It is only through this that the future of any nation, in terms of its continuing socio-economic development in peace, can be guaranteed.
