NAWEC staff arraigned for causing death

One Babucarr Jammeh, a mechanic working with the National Water and Electricity Company Limited (NAWEC), was on Friday arraigned at the Brikama Magistrates' Court before acting Principal Magistrate A Kemo Ceesay charged with a rash and negligent act causing death.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge, and was subsequently granted bail in the sum of D20,000 with a Gambian surety.

According to the particulars of offence, on 28th August 2010 at Kanilia village in the Foni Kansala district of the West Coast Region, the accused, Babucarr Jammeh, drove a motor vehicle with registration number NAWEC 41 Mitsubishi pickup in a rash and negligent manner, thereby caused the death of one Marie Catherine Mendy Johnson.

At that juncture, the police prosecutor, Jammeh, applied for an adjournment to enable him bring his witness to court.

His application was granted, and the case was subsequently adjourned to 3rd November 2010 for hearing.
