The National Coordinating Farmers Organization The Gambia, NACOFAG, in collaboration with the Coordinator of the international year of family farming over the weekend convened a press conference at Baobab Hotel, with the aim of briefing journalists on the upcoming of the 2014, which is marked as the international year of family farming by the United Nations.
Speaking at the press conference, Muhammed Fayakeh, the President of NACOFAG, expressed delight at the event. As he puts it, the guest had come all the way from Spain to meet the government of The Gambia, with the aim of sharing ideas.
While stating that it is a clear indication of the commitment of the Gambian leader in ensuring that the country takes part in this very important, he said, the purpose of the press conference was to promote the concept of the family farming.
The NACOFAG’s President, who disclosed that 2014 will mark the international year of family, he said, they would among other things establish a national committee for the event.
For his part, Coordinator of international year of family farming, Jose Antonio OSABA Garcia of Spain, expressed delight at the hospitality accorded him during his one-week stay in The Gambia.
Noting that people have been promoting the declaration of family farming since in 2008, he said, there is many misconception that family farming belongs to the past.
“We don’t want agriculture without farmers. That is why it is very important for The Gambia to join the continent to acknowledge showing to the wider world that it is only family farming that can feed the world in a sustainable manner,” he argued.
Other speakers at the press conference included Alieu Sowe, the Coordinator of NACOFAG, Musa Sowe Youths Wing leader and Lamin Fadera of NAFS.
