Methodist Preparatory School on 26 April 2013 beat defending champions St Mary’s Lower Basic School in the final to clinch the Standard Chartered Bank Gambia Limited sponsored primary school cricket league tournament played at the McCarthy Square in Banjul.
Methodist Preparatory School batted first and was able to score 53 runs in thirteen overs with 5 wickets.
St Mary’s Lower Basic School later came to bat and needed 54 runs in thirteen overs in order to win but they were not able to make it; Methodist Prep balled them out with 42 runs in eleven overs with 10 wickets.
Methodist Preparatory School’s Sam Mboob, who was awarded Man of the Match and also the Bowler of the Series, managed to grab five wickets in three overs with his wonderful bowling techniques and collected a book coupon worth D1,000.
Bai Modou Jack of Methodist Preparatory School was awarded Man of the Series with D1,000 worth of book coupon to collect books at Timbuktu.
Methodist Preparatory School and St Mary’s Lower Basic School each received a trophy, a certificate and book coupons of D4,000 and D3,000 respectively whilst other schools that participated - Wesley Lower Basic, Albion Lower Basic, Muhammedan Lower Basic, Campama Lower Basic, Rev JC Faye and St Joseph’s Lower Basic schools - were each given a certificate and D1,000 worth of book coupon to collect books at Timbuktu.
Coordinator of the primary school cricket league tournament Peter Campbell said he was delightful that the tournament was a success and urged all the participants to be serious in the game even as they continue to go for training.
He thanked their main sponsor Standard Chartered Bank Gambia Limited for answering to their call.
Mr Campbell also commended his fellow cricketers, coaches and officials stressing out that all would have not happened without them.
He concluded by saying that the teams should be practising more often because the knockout is in weeks’ time.
