Magistrate Jallow of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court recently convicted and sentenced one Alim Bangura to a fine of D5,000 in default to serve six months in prison.
Alim Bangura, who pleaded guilty of the charge of obtaining money by false pretence, was also ordered to compensate the complainant with D162, 000.
The charge sheet read that in April 2011, at Kanifing, in the Kanifing Municipality, the convict, Alim Bangura, with intent to defraud, obtained $7,240 from one Obi Kanu and Abdulai Kamara on the pretext that he would procure them a visa to travel to Europe, America and Canada, which he knew was false representation.
According to the facts of the case as narrated by the prosecuting officer, Sgt Kinteh, it happened in April 2011, in Kanifing.
He said the convict approached the complainants and told them he could procure a visa for them to travel to Europe, America and Canada.
Sgt Kinteh further narrated that the convict charged the complainants US$7,240 for the transaction, which he failed to do and continued to give the complainants false excuses.
He added that the matter was reported to the police and the convict was arrested and charged with the offence committed.
