Man Charged with Attempted Suicide

One Juventus Onyehi, was recently brought before the Bundung Magistrates' Court to answer to a charge of attempted suicide preferred against him contrary to the laws of The Gambia.

According to the charge sheet, on 17th July, 2009 at Manjai Kunda, the accused Juventus Onyehi attempted to kill himself with a knife by stabbing himself on his stomach.

He pleaded not guilty.

According to prosecutor 1674 Ceesay on 17th July 2009, along the

Majai-Kotu Highway
, the accused asked one shopkeeper whether he had a knife for sale and the shopkeeper responded in the negative. He added that the accused later went back to the same shopkeeper and borrowed his knife and proceeded near a restaurant where he started stabbing at himself. Prosecutor Ceesay further told the court that an eye-witness reported the matter to Manjai police station, and the accused was arrested and taken to the said police station.

At the police station, the accused was rushed to the health centre where he was treated and discharged.

The case, which was presided over by Magistrate Kayode, was adjourned to a later date. Accused was denied bail.
