The people of Madina Ward in Lamin village, Western Region, at the weekend embarked on road rehabilitation exercise in the community.
The voluntary exercise, described by many at the programme as timely and important, was attended mainly by the youth of the ward and coordinated by one Yerro Baldeh.
Speaking during the exercise, Ward Councilor Fabakery B. Manneh said the initiative was suggested by one Yerro Baldeh who also put in his own resources to kick start the cause.
"The condition of the road at Madina ward was very terrible," he lamented.
He added that the best way to help the community to have good road is to improvise by filling empty bags with sand and blocking the way to preserve the road from erosion and prevent environmental degradation.
Mr. Manneh stated that the community of Madina ward are seriously affected by the recent rains, which has caused them to embrace the Yerro idea.
He advised the Lamin youth to put aside party politics and concentrate on the development of their community.
"Government alone cannot do all; therefore the intervention of the community is very important," he said, thanking Mr. Yerro Baldeh for mobilising the youth to engage on such a development project. "By doing so, they are not doing it for anybody but for themselves," he said
Mr. Manneh also used the occasion to appeal to community members, especially those with vehicles, to divert to other roads for the time being to avoid erosion in the area thus making it difficult for vehicles to ply the road.
While describing the initiative as a step in the right direction, Mr. Manneh commended the youth for their participation in the exercise.
For his part, Yerro Baldeh, the man behind the initiative, thanked the youth for their cooperation and understanding in undertaking the initiative.
