Campaign
for the forthcoming local government by-elections starts tomorrow, Saturday,
and would last for 10 days.
“Campaign
begins on Saturday 13th May and ends on Monday 22nd May 2017,” chairman of the
Independent Election Commission (IEC), Alieu Momarr Njai, said in a press
release issued yesterday.
He
said the election would be held on 24 May 2017.
Mr
Njai revealed that at the close of nomination on 10 May 2017, the nomination
papers of candidates in the forthcoming election were accepted and endorsed by
the IEC Returning Officers in Kanifing, Brikama and Janjanbureh Administrative
Areas.
They
are: Baboucarr Mansally of APRC in Tallinding; Rohey Dem of GDC in Tallinding,
and Musa Badjie of UDP in Tallinding.
Alhagi
Alpha MS Jallow, GDC in Old Jeshwang; Junkung SM Dukureh of UDP in Old
Jeshwang; Araba Bojang of APRC in Bantanjang; Alieu Gibba of APRC in Somita,
and Mamadi Manneh of UDP of Sukuta.
Therefore,
Mr Njai said, in accordance with the Elections Act, elections would be held in
Tallinding, Old Jeshwang and Galleh wards on Wednesday, 24 May 2017.
He
further explained that in accordance with the same act, Araba Bojang, Alieu
Gibba and Mamadi Manneh have been duly elected councillors for their various
wards since “they were the only ones nominated in their various wards at the
close of nomination”.
