Mohamed Barrie, a lecturer at the School of Education at Gambia College, has authored a new book on theWest Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) English syllabus.
Mr Barrie, who holds Bachelor of Arts (General) Degree, Diploma in Education and certificate in Theatre Directing, revealed that the book touches on essay writing, letter writing, grammar and comprehension, etc.
According to him, the book was written to help desperate school and out-of-school youths as well as other candidates struggling to gain credits in the WASSCE and similar examinations.
He added that the book helps to improve understanding in the approach of teaching some of the popular themes in the language.
The author added that the book can also be used by college and first-year university students.
According to the author, the book places emphasis on modern approach in the learning, teaching and use of the English language necessitated by increasing globalization and computer revolution.
Moreover, the college lecturer adduced that the book also emphasizes modern approach and clearly overcomes the shortcomings of English Language course books that are available to local candidates preparing for WASSCE. The book, he added, took him more than five years to complete.
Asked about his motivation in writing the book, Mr Barrie said his primary aim is to help students to improve themselves in English Language so that they overcome the massive failures in the subject.
He urged the education ministry to recommend the use of the book in schools, adding that the book, which has already been published, is now on sale at Timbooktu Bookshop.
