The Kanifing Municipal Youth Parliament (KMYP) on Sunday February 22nd held its congress at the Kanifing Municipal Council Chambers. KMYP is one of the seven regional youth parliaments of the National Youth Parliament of The Gambia which serves as an advocacy network for young people and also aims to inculcate responsible citizenship in youth to enable them work effectively and positively to national development.
The purpose of the congress was to elect the new executive to run the affairs of the parliament for the next couple of years.
Addressing young parliamentarians, Honorable Babucarr Mbaye Saidy Clark of The Gambia National Youth Parliament (NYP) revealed that the youth parliament is here to inculcate responsible citizenship among youths and to empower them to play the quarter to national development.
"NYP is tasked with promoting the principles of democracy and rule of law, this is why we invite the independent electoral commission (IEC) to manifest our transparency even at the grass roots level," he said.
At the end of the deliberations, a new twenty member parliament was formed after a much contested election.
Key positions went to Kawsu Badjie, who was reelected as Speaker. The Deputy Speaker post went to Rirrah Ceesay. Lamin Ceesay was elected Clerk and Dembo Jammeh emerged as the new Financial Officer of the Parliament.
At the end of the congress, Speaker of the KM Youth Parliament thanked the young parliamentarians for the trust they have in him. Honorable Badjie called on them to work with him for the attainment of the aims and objectives of the parliament.
