Kanifing Municipality Disaster Management Committee (KDMC) on Monday ended a two-day training of 50 Ward Disaster Management Committees on their roles and responsibilities.

The participants were drawn from various Wards within the Kanifing Municipality to be sensitised on their functions before, during and after disasters occur within their surroundings.

Speaking at the end of the two-day training workshop, the Kanifing Disaster Management Coordinator (KDMC), Binta Sey-Jadama, commended the participants for successfully attending the training.

She expressed hope that it would enable them to carry out their work effectively.

She said the main purpose of the training was to help the ward disaster committee members prepare for any disaster of its kind within their communities.

She used the forum to call on the residents within the municipality to be responsive during, before and after disaster periods.

During the two-day workshop, the participants dwelt on topics such as the ground rules of the training, overview of the disaster management Act, basic disaster definitions and terms, identification of hazards and risk per ward, roles and responsibilities of local structures, rationale for disaster assessment, disaster relief types or operations and roles of the communities in relief or preparedness.

Mrs Sey-Jadama thanked the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for funding the two-day training for the first batch of the ward disaster management committees within the Kanifing Municipality.
