Another death sentence was yesterday pronounced on one Babucarr Tunkara, a young Gambian, after the court found him guilty of causing the death of a Turkish national by stabbing him to death with a knife, in September 2009 at Fajara Pipeline.

Justice Emmanuel Nkea of the Special Criminal Court who read the verdict said the prosecution had proven that the convicted person was responsible for the death of the Turkish national, adding that he was convinced by the evidence of the prosecution witnesses.

“I hold and found that the convict was culpable of the offence charged, and I hereby convict and sentence  him to death,” the judge said in his judgment.

Justice Nkea gave a detailed summary of the case of the prosecution and that of the defence.

It would be recalled that Babucarr Tunkara, was accused of causing the death of one Ahmed Serit Iseri, a Turkish national, by stabbing him with a knife on 6th September 2009 at a residence in Fajara Pipeline in the Kanifing Municipality.

The case was first mentioned at the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court and was later transferred to the high court, which has jurisdiction.

He was first arraigned before Justice Moses Richards on Thursday 19 November 2009, where he pleaded not guilty, and the trial later commenced.

The case was later handled by Justice Ikpala and, finally, Justice Nkea who convicted and sentenced Tunkara to death yesterday.
